South America
South America Fact File
South America is the world’s fourth largest continent and also fourth in population size (355 million). Linked to North America its name is also derived from Amerigo Vespucci who was the first European to have identified North and South America as not being India. South America is home to a number of ancient civilization sites, with many still believed to be hidden by dense rain forest. The Amazon basin is one of the world’s largest tropical rain forest areas and vital part of the world’s “lungs” producing oxygen during the trees’ rapid growth. South America has 16 independent states.
